What Can Marine Diesel Engine Oil Analysis Tell You? #
Laboratory oil analysis can provide useful information about conditions occurring inside a marine diesel engine.
A small sample of engine oil is sent to a laboratory and analyzed for different contaminants and materials.
What Can Oil Analysis Detect? #
Depending on the laboratory and test performed, analysis may identify:
- Wear metals
- Fuel dilution
- Coolant contamination
- Water
- Soot
- Other contaminants
These findings can provide additional information that is not visible during a normal engine inspection.
Wear Metals #
Different engine components contain different metals.
Abnormally elevated levels can sometimes provide clues about internal component wear.
The results should be interpreted in the context of engine hours, oil age and other diagnostic findings.
Coolant or Fuel Contamination #
Coolant detected in the oil may indicate an internal engine or cooling-system concern.
Fuel dilution may point toward combustion or fuel-system problems.
Either condition may justify additional testing.
Oil Analysis Has Limitations #
One oil sample should not be treated as a complete engine diagnosis.
Results are more useful when considered alongside:
- Engine hours
- Service history
- Compression results
- Blow-by
- Engine performance
- Previous oil-analysis trends
- Visual inspection
If the engine oil was changed immediately before the sample was taken, the analysis may also contain less historical information.
